At this point in Zuri’s life he is passionate about two things, his dog and his car. It’s only appropriate that he had both in his senior picture.

Sometimes the shoots that I enjoy the most are the ones that force me to improvise. I love corrugated metal. We happened to be driving home from another shoot and I spotted this barn. My only light source were the headlights in my truck. This was shot using a toy medium format camera with Agfa-Optima film that was then cross-processed. Very fun.

It’s not very often you get an opportunity to shoot a portrait at 10,000 feet in the middle of an aspen grove during a snow storm. We loaded up the gear (camera, dogs and an old wooden chair), put the truck in four wheel drive and hoped for the best. This was one of those shoots that I could have packed up after the first capture and been happy. It was hard to take a bad picture. Shara proved not only to be a beautiful subject but put up with the cold weather with a smile on her face.

Sam grew up in Southwest Colorado in the rural town of Ridgway. I sometimes feel like the “Climber” stereotype is one who has large muscles and a fearless attitude so naturally, when I met fresh out of high school Sam with his long, lanky limbs, HULKAMANIA T-shirt, college grad vocabulary and rather geeky aspirations in life I was a bit skeptical of the level of climber he was going to be. I couldn’t have been more wrong. He not only had the form and experience but he was willing to take a 20+ foot fall (which I now know is called a “Whipper”) just so I could take a picture of it. I’m glad his mom was out of the country. Anyway, we got some great photos and I have no doubt this kid is going places in life.
